Official mainland China carrier. Purchase via the Unicom UK website. Best for long stays (30+ days). Local rates with full 4G/5G in all cities.

💡 Tip: Buy and install your eSIM before you arrive at the airport. Chinese carrier networks may block the download of eSIM profiles once you're in the country.

Installing takes about 5 minutes. Check your phone supports eSIM first — most iPhones from XS onwards and Samsung Galaxy S20+ do.

Download the provider app (Airalo, Nomad, or Unicom) and create a free account before travelling.
Purchase your China data plan inside the app. You'll receive a QR code or auto-install option within minutes.
On iPhone: go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. Scan the QR code or tap the link from your email.
On Android: go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. The steps vary slightly by manufacturer.
Label it "China eSIM" and set it as your Data SIM when you arrive. Keep your UK SIM for calls and texts.
At the airport: switch to your China eSIM for data. Your UK SIM handles voice calls (roaming charges may apply — turn off voice roaming if not needed).

⚠️ Important: Turn off automatic app updates before landing. Downloading updates over a China data plan eats through your allowance fast.

With your eSIM active, most blocked apps (Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram) will work normally. A few extra tips to stay fully connected.

Download offline maps — Google Maps China offline is patchy. Use MAPS.ME with an offline China pack downloaded before you fly.
WeChat is essential for China. Download it before you travel and get a Chinese contact to verify your account — WeChat Pay at local markets needs this.
Baidu Maps is the local standard for precise navigation in Chongqing. Worth downloading with the English language pack.
DiDi (Chinese Uber) — download before you fly. The English version works fine. Accept cash or link Alipay when you set up your account (see Tool 3 below).
Back up your photos daily via iCloud or Google Photos — both work through your eSIM's VPN routing.

Alipay for Foreign Visitors

Cash is nearly obsolete in China. Alipay's "Tour Pass" lets UK visitors pay almost everywhere — markets, taxis, restaurants, pharmacies — without a Chinese bank account.

Alipay International — "Tour Pass"

Launched for international visitors. Load it with a foreign Visa or Mastercard. Accepted at 80 million merchants across China.

Step-by-step setup (takes about 10 minutes):

Download the Alipay app from the App Store or Google Play. Search "Alipay — Simplify Your Life". The international version is in English.
Register with your UK phone number. Enter your number, receive an SMS code, and create a password. No Chinese number required.
On the app home screen, tap the Tour Pass banner (or search "Tour Pass" in the top search bar). This is the section built for foreign visitors.
Add a foreign card — Visa or Mastercard (debit or credit). American Express is not supported. Most UK bank debit cards work fine.
Top up your balance — load between £20–£100 equivalent. You can top up again anytime from the app. Unused balance can be refunded to your card after your trip.
When paying, open Alipay and tap the QR code pay icon. Merchants scan your code — or scan their QR and enter the amount. It takes 3 seconds.
Keep a backup card — a few international hotels and upscale restaurants accept foreign Visa/Mastercard directly. Carry your card as backup.

💡 Chongqing tip: Street food, Yangtze riverfront vendors, and the Jiefangbei district's night markets all require Alipay. The Discovery China welcome team can assist with setup on arrival if needed.
