As of January 2025, China extended visa-free access for UK citizens for stays of up to 30 days. This policy is confirmed active through December 2026 — meaning you can book and fly without ever visiting an embassy.

The visa-free policy is subject to continued diplomatic relations. It has been stable and renewed consistently since November 2023. We recommend checking the UK Foreign Office travel advice (gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china) before booking, as with any international travel. As of this handbook's publication date (March 2026), the policy is fully active.

Joint Commission International accreditation is the global gold standard for hospital quality. It covers patient safety, infection control, staffing ratios, and clinical protocols. All Discovery China partner hospitals are JCI-certified.

If your MDT recommends medication or follow-up treatment, all prescriptions are written using INN (International Non-proprietary Names) — the universal drug naming system used in the UK. Your UK GP or pharmacist can action any prescription immediately. Chinese-branded medications are only used if you explicitly request Traditional Chinese Medicine preparations as part of the wellness programme.

We strongly recommend travel insurance that includes medical repatriation cover (minimum £2M recommended). Many UK travel policies cover medical tourism — check your policy wording. No. All partner hospitals have dedicated International Patient Departments with English-speaking doctors, nurses, and coordinators. Your Discovery China concierge is with you throughout every hospital visit. All reports, results, and treatment plans are delivered in English. The language barrier that might exist in general tourism settings simply doesn't apply to our programme.
Chongqing is famous for spicy Sichuan cuisine, but the hotels and cruise ship we use are experienced in catering to international guests. Your dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free, medical) are collected before travel and communicated to every venue in advance. Western menu options are available at all meals. Medicinal meals on the cruise are tailored to your TCM consultation.
You're already in a JCI-accredited hospital system with 24-hour emergency access. If anything unexpected arises from your diagnostics, you're in the best possible place — surrounded by specialists who can act immediately. Your concierge and our London-based medical team are available by phone around the clock. Medical repatriation (covered by your travel insurance) can be arranged within 24 hours if needed.
Yes. Reports are formatted to UK GP standards and cross-referenced to NICE guidelines. Imaging is provided in DICOM format, the universal medical imaging standard used by all NHS PACS systems. Multiple Discovery China patients have had their Chinese reports directly actioned by UK GPs and NHS specialists. We provide a GP handover letter template as part of your departure pack.
It depends on your policy. Some UK private health insurers (including certain Bupa and AXA plans) will cover overseas diagnostics as part of an approved international health plan. We recommend contacting your insurer before booking. We provide detailed invoices and medical reports that meet insurance submission standards. Many of our clients use the savings on the trip to part-fund their premium.
You can absolutely travel alone — in fact, most of our clients do. Your concierge is your companion for all medical elements. The hotels and cruise ship are safe and well-connected. That said, some clients find it comforting to bring a partner or friend. Partners can join the programme (accommodation upgrade required) and are welcome at all non-clinical sessions including consultations, wellness activities, and cruise excursions.
