Safety & Trust

Is medical tourism to China safe for UK citizens?
Yes. Discovery China partners exclusively with Grade 3A hospitals — the highest tier in China's accreditation system, equivalent to CQC "Outstanding" in the UK. Our primary partner, Chongqing Medical University Hospital, was established in 1892 and treats over 4 million patients annually. All VIP international patients receive a dedicated bilingual liaison, and medical reports are delivered in English. China also has one of the lowest rates of hospital-acquired infections among major economies. We handle every detail — from airport pickup to post-screening follow-up — so you never navigate the system alone.
What are the hospital standards in China?
Chinese hospitals are graded on a three-tier system (1A–3A) by the National Health Commission. Grade 3A is the top level, requiring 500+ beds, specialist departments, advanced imaging, and rigorous quality audits. Our partner hospitals use Siemens and GE MRI scanners — the same brands found in UK NHS trusts and Harley Street clinics. Staff-to-patient ratios in VIP wings are typically 1:3, far better than NHS averages. All labs follow ISO 15189 standards for medical testing.
Can my UK GP accept Chinese medical reports?
Yes. All diagnostic reports from our partner hospitals are delivered in English with full imaging files (DICOM format on USB/cloud). UK GPs routinely accept overseas medical records — they're added to your NHS Summary Care Record like any private test. We also provide a GP cover letter explaining each test and result in NHS-standard terminology. Over 90% of our patients report their GP incorporated the Chinese results into their ongoing care plan without issue.
Is the Chongqing hospital accredited?
Yes. Chongqing Medical University First Affiliated Hospital is a Grade 3A facility — the highest classification in China. Established in 1892, it's one of the oldest and most respected teaching hospitals in southwest China with over 3,500 beds. It holds national accreditation from China's National Health Commission and maintains international research partnerships. The hospital's VIP international wing has English-speaking specialists across radiology, cardiology, gastroenterology, and more.
Will I have an English-speaking doctor?
Yes. Every Discovery China patient is assigned a bilingual medical liaison who accompanies you to all appointments. Specialist consultations in the VIP wing are conducted with real-time English interpretation, and your MDT (multi-disciplinary team) review is delivered in English. All written reports, imaging results, and recommendations are provided in English. Our London-based concierge is also available by WhatsApp 7 days a week throughout your trip.

Costs & Comparisons

How much does a private MRI cost in China vs UK?
A full-body MRI in the UK costs £900–£2,500 privately (Bupa, Nuffield). The same scan at our Grade 3A partner hospital in Chongqing costs approximately £150–£300. That's a saving of up to 85%. Discovery China's all-inclusive 10-day package starts from £2,499 and includes the MRI, blood panels, specialist consultations, a 5-star Yangtze cruise, TCM wellness sessions, accommodation, and bilingual concierge — far less than a UK private MRI alone plus a comparable holiday.
What's included in the £2,499 Discovery Package?
The Discovery Package (from £2,499) includes: full-body MRI scan with results in 24 hours, comprehensive blood panel (50+ biomarkers), specialist MDT consultation with English report, 5-star Yangtze River cruise (shared cabin) through the Three Gorges, daily TCM wellness sessions (acupuncture, Tai Chi, herbal nutrition), airport transfers in Chongqing, bilingual medical liaison at all appointments, and 24/7 London-based WhatsApp concierge support. Flights are not included but we provide booking guidance.
Are there hidden costs?
No. Our package prices are fully transparent and all-inclusive for the services listed. The only costs not included are: international flights (typically £400–£600 return London–Chongqing), travel insurance (£30–£80), personal spending money, and any additional specialist tests your screening reveals you need (quoted separately, typically £50–£200 each). There are no visa fees — China is visa-free for UK citizens. We provide a full cost breakdown before you book. See our cost calculator for a personalised estimate.
How does this compare to medical tourism in Turkey or India?
Turkey and India are popular for cosmetic surgery and specific procedures. China's strength is diagnostic excellence — advanced imaging, full-body screening, and preventive health checks. Chinese Grade 3A hospitals have newer MRI/CT equipment on average than Turkish or Indian medical tourism facilities. China also offers a unique wellness dimension: the Yangtze cruise and TCM programme turn the trip into a genuine holiday, not just a hospital visit. For UK citizens, China's visa-free entry (Turkey requires an e-visa, India requires a visa) simplifies travel significantly.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. We offer a deposit-and-balance structure: a £500 deposit secures your booking, with the remainder due 30 days before departure. For patients who need more flexibility, we can discuss extended payment plans on a case-by-case basis. Contact us via free consultation to discuss options. All payments are processed securely in GBP — you never need to handle currency conversion.

NHS & UK Healthcare

How long is the current NHS MRI waiting list?
As of 2026, NHS England reports an average MRI waiting time of 6–18 weeks depending on your region and clinical priority. Some non-urgent scans face waits of 6+ months. The NHS diagnostic backlog stands at over 1.6 million patients. With Discovery China, you receive your full-body MRI results within 24 hours of the scan — the same day you arrive at the hospital. No referral chain, no triage delays.
Can I keep my place on the NHS waiting list while going to China?
Yes — going private (whether in the UK or abroad) does not affect your NHS waiting list position. You remain on the NHS list exactly as before. Many of our patients use the Chinese screening results to have a more informed conversation with their GP or NHS consultant, which can sometimes accelerate their NHS pathway if results show something that needs urgent attention.
Will my GP support my decision to seek treatment abroad?
Most GPs are supportive of patients taking proactive steps for their health. UK patients have the legal right to seek healthcare abroad. We provide your GP with a structured medical report in NHS-standard terminology, making integration seamless. If your GP has concerns, our medical team can liaise directly. We also offer a pre-travel prep checklist that includes requesting your GP summary — a step your practice is legally required to provide.
Is this like "health tourism" — am I queue-jumping?
No. You're paying privately for services in another country, just as thousands of UK patients do in Spain, Turkey, and Thailand every year. You're not displacing any NHS patient or using NHS resources. Medical tourism is a well-established, legitimate industry. The UK government's own guidance acknowledges patients' right to seek treatment abroad. You keep your full NHS entitlements while also getting the answers you need now, not in 6 months.

Travel & Visa

Do UK citizens need a visa for China in 2026?
No. As of 2026, UK citizens can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. No application, no embassy visit, no fee — just a valid passport with at least 6 months' remaining validity. This policy has been extended through at least December 2026. Our 10-day programme fits comfortably within this window. Read our full visa-free guide for details on entry requirements and border procedures.
How long is the flight to Chongqing?
Direct flights from London to Chongqing take approximately 10–11 hours. Airlines serving this route include China Southern, Air China, and Hainan Airlines, with connections via Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou adding 2–4 hours. Return flights from Chongqing to London are typically 11–12 hours. We recommend booking 1–2 months in advance for the best fares (typically £400–£600 return in economy). Our concierge provides flight booking guidance when you reserve your package.
What's included in the Yangtze cruise?
The 5-star Yangtze River cruise runs for 5 nights through the spectacular Three Gorges. Included: ensuite cabin (shared in Discovery Package, executive in Premium), all meals with wellness menu options, daily Tai Chi on deck, TCM acupuncture sessions, guided shore excursions to the Three Gorges Dam, Fengdu Ghost City, and Shibaozhai Pagoda, plus evening cultural performances. It's a genuine 5-star cruise experience, not a medical transfer — patients consistently rate it the highlight of their trip.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — we strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment abroad. Standard UK travel policies typically cover this; check that your policy doesn't exclude "pre-arranged medical treatment" (some do). We can recommend insurance providers experienced with medical tourism. Policies typically cost £30–£80 for 2-week coverage. Discovery China provides medical records and hospital documentation to support any insurance claims if needed.
Is Chongqing safe for solo travellers?
Yes. Chongqing is one of China's largest cities (30+ million metro population) and is consistently ranked among the safest major cities globally. Violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. The city has excellent public transport (metro, river ferries, cable cars), and our bilingual liaison accompanies you to all medical appointments. For free time, Chongqing's famous hotpot restaurants, Ciqikou Ancient Town, and Hongya Cave are easily accessible and tourist-friendly.

Medical Procedures

How long does an MRI take in China?
A full-body MRI at our partner hospital takes approximately 45–60 minutes. Unlike NHS scans where you may wait weeks for the appointment and then another 2–4 weeks for results, our VIP pathway delivers your imaging appointment within hours of arrival and written results within 24 hours. The scan uses the same Siemens 3T MRI technology found in top UK private hospitals. You'll receive a USB drive with full DICOM files plus a PDF report in English.
How quickly will I get my results?
MRI and imaging results: within 24 hours. Blood panel results: within 24–48 hours. Your full MDT (multi-disciplinary team) report — combining all test results with specialist interpretations and recommendations — is delivered within 48–72 hours of your final test. Compare this to NHS timelines where imaging reports take 2–4 weeks and specialist reviews can take months. All results are in English and provided digitally (email + USB) for easy sharing with your UK GP.
What tests are included in the health screening?
The standard screening package includes: full-body MRI scan, cardiac health panel (ECG, echocardiogram), comprehensive blood panel (50+ biomarkers including liver, kidney, thyroid, tumour markers, diabetes, cholesterol), urine analysis, BMI and body composition, blood pressure and vascular assessment, abdominal ultrasound, and a specialist MDT consultation reviewing all results. Additional tests (CT scan, endoscopy, specialist referrals) are available at additional cost if your screening reveals areas needing deeper investigation.
Can I get a second opinion on existing UK results?
Absolutely. Bring your existing NHS or private UK results and our specialist team will review them alongside your new Chinese screening data. This dual-dataset approach often catches things a single set of results might miss. Many patients come specifically for this — they have UK results but want faster specialist interpretation or imaging that their NHS trust couldn't schedule. Our MDT report will reference your UK results where relevant.
What if the screening finds something serious?
If your screening reveals a condition requiring treatment, our medical team provides a full written recommendation and can arrange immediate further investigation during your stay (at transparent additional cost). For ongoing treatment, we provide comprehensive records for your UK GP or specialist. In urgent cases, our team can coordinate directly with NHS or UK private consultants. Discovery China is a diagnostic service — we find the answers, then ensure you have the best pathway for treatment, whether in China or back in the UK.

Booking & Logistics

How far in advance do I need to book?
We recommend booking 4–8 weeks before your preferred travel date. This gives time for flight booking, GP letter requests, and any pre-travel preparation. However, we've accommodated patients with as little as 2 weeks' notice. Cruise dates are fixed (departures run regularly), so earlier booking gives you more date flexibility. Book a free consultation to discuss your preferred dates and we'll confirm availability within 24 hours.
What happens after I book a consultation?
Within 24 hours of your free consultation request, a Discovery China advisor contacts you (phone, email, or WhatsApp — your choice). We'll discuss your health concerns, answer questions, explain the programme in detail, and recommend the best package. There's zero pressure — about 40% of consultation calls are purely exploratory. If you decide to proceed, we secure your booking with a £500 deposit and send a comprehensive pre-travel pack.
Can I bring a companion or family member?
Yes. Companions are welcome and common — about 60% of our patients travel with a spouse or family member. Companion packages include the Yangtze cruise, accommodation, meals, and excursions (no medical screening). Companion pricing is available on request and is significantly less than the full medical package. Children over 12 can join the cruise; we can arrange separate childcare for younger children on request.
What if I need to cancel?
Our cancellation policy is transparent: full refund (minus admin fee) if cancelled 30+ days before departure; 50% refund if 15–29 days before; no refund within 14 days of departure. We strongly recommend travel insurance with cancellation cover (available from ~£30). Rebooking to a different date is free if done 30+ days before your original departure. COVID or serious illness cancellations are handled on a compassionate basis — contact us to discuss.
Do you handle everything, or do I need to arrange things myself?
We handle everything medical and logistical in China: hospital appointments, cruise booking, airport transfers, accommodation, bilingual liaison, and WhatsApp support. You arrange: flights (with our guidance), travel insurance, and passport validity check. Our free prep checklist walks you through everything step by step. From the moment you land in Chongqing to the moment you board your flight home, we're with you.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

What TCM treatments are included?
All Discovery China packages include: daily Tai Chi sessions on the cruise deck (suitable for all fitness levels), 2–3 acupuncture sessions with qualified TCM practitioners, herbal nutrition consultation with personalised dietary recommendations, and cupping therapy. Premium Package patients also receive a private TCM wellness assessment and extended treatment sessions. All TCM practitioners hold national TCM licences and have 10+ years' clinical experience.
Is Traditional Chinese Medicine evidence-based?
TCM practices like acupuncture have growing evidence bases. The WHO recognises acupuncture for over 30 conditions, and NHS England itself offers acupuncture for chronic pain. Our TCM programme is complementary to the Western diagnostic screening — it's a wellness enhancement, not a replacement for evidence-based medicine. Think of it as the spa and mindfulness element of your wellness holiday, delivered by practitioners with genuine clinical training rather than resort therapists.
